Secure Wi-Fi Onboarding with Wi-Fi Easy Connect™ in RDK-B

July 17, 2025

Introduction

The increasing number of connected devices across various sectors of human life such as homes, industrial networks, or even businesses is accelerating at a rapid pace. Secure device provisioning now forms a crucial part of network infrastructure with devices lacking user interfaces ranging from smart appliances and sensors to gateways and routers.

In the traditional scenario, Wi-Fi onboarding was primarily based on entering password manually or using outdated protocols such as WPS. However, these methods appear to be insecure and inefficient.

In the wake of these challenges, ThinkPalm integrated Wi-Fi Easy Connect™ into the RDK-B platform powered by the Device Provisioning Protocol (DPP). The new solution aims at securing Wi-Fi provisioning via QR code instead of manual entry of password.

This case study provides insights on some of the key challenges faced, the technical solution delivered, and the impact it has created.

Challenge: Onboarding Devices Without User-interface

Traditional WiFi onboarding like manual passwords and WPS is
insecure and inconvenient for devices without screens or keyboards.
Headless devices, such as smart plugs and sensors, can’t be easily

configured this way, leading to several problems.

Following are the pain points faced:

  • Manual password entry is tedious and errorprone for multiple devices.
  • Headless IoT devices can’t be set up easily.
  • Default/shared passwords pose security risks.
  • Scaling is difficult in enterprise or managed settings.
  • More device returns and support requests from frustrated users.

Attaining a secure approach towards Wi-Fi onboarding is crucial in the case of industrial use cases, commercial purposes or even residential with the advent of IoT as things are turning smarter.

Solution: Implementing Wi-Fi Easy Connect in RDK-B

To address these challenges, ThinkPalm developed and integrated Wi-Fi Easy Connect functionality into the RDK-B (Reference Design Kit – Broadband) framework.

  • DPP Integration: Uses WiFi Alliance’s DPP with public key cryptography to securely onboard devices without passwords.
  • Gateway as Configurator: RDKB routers and gateways act as DPP Configurators to securely provision client devices.
  • QR Code Support: Devices are provisioned by scanning a QR codewith a smartphone or app for secure credential exchange.
  • TR-181 Configuration Model in RDK-B: ThinkPalm enhanced TR-181with DPP features like signing keys, roles, and status flags.
  • Easy Integration with OneWiFi and HAL APIs: Integrates withThinkPalm’s OneWiFi and HAL APIs for streamlined devicemanagement and real-time telemetry.
  • Persistent Provisioning: Devices automatically reconnect afterpower cycles since credentials are securely stored.

Hackathon Recognition

The solution was widely acknowledged at the RDK Hackathon 2025 for its industry relevance, practical utility and technical prowess amongst global contributors.

Outcomes Achieved

ThinkPalm’s solution of integrating Wi-Fi Easy Connect in RDK-B has immense scope as it effectively meets real-world demands. It is capable of catering to a wide range of use cases.

Five key benefits of Wi-Fi Easy Connect in RDK-B powered by Device Provisioning Protocol (DPP)

Conclusion

Streamlining Wi-Fi onboarding by embedding Wi-Fi Easy Connect into RDK-B is a pivotal shift in the connected world of today. We can gain access by using a QR code for onboarding securely instead of conventional means such as password input. Furthermore, the solutions prove efficient in terms of usability, data protection, and scalability for manufacturers, service providers, and enterprise networks.
